Emma King Elementary School was opened September 1998. It was named after Emma King a wonderful woman that spent over 40 yrs sharing her love of literacy and education with her community.
Early Years & CareerEmma King was born in England in 1851, her family moved to Canada 3 yrs later and settled in Simcoe County.
At the age of 17, Emma King became a teacher. She started her career teaching at West Ward School that was located on the present day site of Barrie Post Office downtown. Years later when the school closed, Emma King taught at Prince of Wales School and finished her teaching career there. |
AccomplishmentsEmma King loved teaching young children, sharing her love of books and music with others.
She was a member of the Collier Street United Church and taught Sunday School there for almost 50yrs. She became the first Woman Trustee on the Barrie Public Library Board. She loved reading so much she created Story Time for children at the Barrie Public Library She lived until her 99th year. |
